Woche / Week 19 and 20 - Tjärnö and moving to Gothenburg

08Juni2016

In the early thursday morning at 4 am Nina and me chased everybody into the cars and started our ride to Norway. Nina, Constance and I took the manual car, while - Pierre had to suffer - and drive with the automatic together wit Marta, Paula and James. Constance was our Copilote, Nina and me switched the driver every two hours and the other one slept on the backseats. We drove the whole way to the westcoast of Norway across the fjords where we had to take the ferries. Before the last etappe we freed Constance from the frontseat and let her sleep a while. At a really nice place just before our destination we stopped and had our lunch outside. We drove through different vegetation stages - while it was still almost winter in the mountains, the summer already arived in the valleys. The landscape was incredible and we were stunning when we saw the accomodation that was a big house with two kitchen, bathrooms and four bedrooms. On the big balcony you could enjoy the landscape while sitting in the whirlpool and behind the house there was a big waterfall that motivated us to climb the mountain the same day. In the end only two of us really reached the tib - the guys - while we girls were to busy with making flower-crowns and just climbed half the mountain. In the evening we relaxed in the pool and everybody went to bed early, exausted by the early wakeup.

After a little tense breakfast on Friday we desided to do a walk along a track near the accomodation. The weather was awesome and the landscape as well, actually like I imagine Canada to look like. As the track was a little trickier than we imagined, we needed a lot longer than thought and Paula, Nina and me walked ahead to get the car that was parked at the end of the track and pick up the others on an earlier stop. Since we had two cars we could place one in the beginning and one in the end of the walk and didn’t have to walk the same way back. – Of course we took the wrong key (my mistake) and Nina hitchhiked back to the first car to get it with the right keys. We arrived at the meeting point the same time like the rest of the group. Back home everybody did what he / she wanted – Paula and me did the groceries, Nina and Constance went out with the boat and Pierre showed Marta how to drive a manual car. In  the evening we had dinner together and a hot-tab-session. As Marta always sang the song “500 miles” I had the idea to watch “Benny and Joon” in the evening (has 500 Miles as titlesong). Nina, Paula and Constance totally loved the movie and Constance played the song the next days so many times, that we forbid it, afraid to hate it some time.

For Saturday our host recommended us a tour by car, that led us along two Fjords. In the beginning the weather was awesome but it turned bad more and more. The ride was really nice and we stopped several times to enjoy the view. For lunch we stopped at one of the nice viewpoints as well and had a picknick. The ride led us to a town where Lars recommended us a Café – after a short visit there we desided to get an icecafe in the supermarket and drive on. In the supermarket a really nice german lady asked us if we need any help, she lived in Askvoll for 50 years teaching german. She told us, that there were ferries from the town to the most western part of Norway but for us it was already to late to take them. She still gave us the plan for the ferries. As the weather got worse and worse and we more and more tired, we drove back without any further stopps and I fell asleep some time on the front seat. In the afternoon everybody relaxed a little and James, Pierre, Marta and later Nina too, went to go fishing – very successful – while Paula, Constance and I watched a French movie.

On Sunday morning the whole house was cleaned and the cars packed. Nina showed Lars the accommodation when we returned  the keys, but he actually didn’t want to see everything as soon as he knew that three germans were with us (actually a little racist but we can also see it as a compliment ;)). For the drive back we split the drivers different this time, as Pierre wanted to drive manual this time and I drove the automatic with Paula, and Constance. Until the lunchbreak everything went right, after we lost Nina with her crew in the first car and had to call them to get instructions for the further ride, as we only had one GPS with us. To drive around Oslo we desided to take the tunnel underneath the Oslofjord, that nina and I took some weeks before as well, and after which we met the others again. Together we drove on to Strömstad to clean the cars, for the rest we took the hoovers of the station. Pierre and I drove the cars back to the rental and came back with one, that Nina brought back to return with her motorcycle – logistical perfectly planned :D After a dinner together we went to bed pretty soon.

On Monday our course about zooplankton started with our teacher Erik, who took us a last time out with Nereus (the small research-boat) to take samples. Erik was totally happy about all the small animals he fished out of big tanks to put them in smaller buckets to be able to have a closer look at them in the lab later. Most of the group weren’t really into working anymore – this week the motivationlevel was pretty low. Erik didn’t care about the fact that only few people were in the lab, he worked with who was interested in it. I tried to had a look at some of the animals on Monday, to study their names with the help of the cram cards the next day. Nina started to create the flashcards and Paula and me completed the work during the following days. Of course it was time for Game of Thrones in the evening ;) We watched the series in the lab this time, while Erik sat next to us, working and taking pictures of the animals.

The course started early on Tuesday with a guest teacher that Erik called the best researcher in the world. The docent hold a lecture about the life as Zooplankton and what kind of adapations are existing. After the lecture we had the whole day for self studies. We worked with our cram-cards and showed Erik the programm as he was really interested in it.

On Wednesday the studying went on, but as the motivationlevel was really low I just went for the flash-cards and had a quick look at all of the species in the Lab befor I called it a day and went to the beach with Paula and Nina. In the evening Nina, Gianlucca and me drove to Strömstad with two other girls of the other course and had an ice cream there before we picked up Rasmus at the bus stop. Some of the group spent the evening in the Lab with studying while Nina and I spent it on the balcony and I knitted Martas socks. Nina knitted also her first sock, willed to finish it before coming home ;)

Thursday morning was still off for studying so we repeated the names again and I started to pack my stuff as the next day was the day of leaving Tjärnö. After lunch we had our exam and almost everybody passed, Erik was really nice with us and let the rest write an assignment instead of a reexam. After everybody picked up his / her results we went out with the boat, this time everybody but Pierre and Marta joined and we took the bigger boat to fit everybody in. Everybody but Tove, Constance and me went snorkling or swimming . After about an hour we collected all the wet people again and Tove brought us back to the station, were we had our last dinner. In the afternoon there was a big swarm of macrells in front of the station and the others brought there rods and started fishing for them – with a lot of success. Some people of the other group joined us at the jetty and went for a swim. Constance couldn’t resist and followed them as well as Gianlucca. The two made me go into the water as well – fully dressed. It was actually the perfect temperature for a swim so I was thankfull for the push into the water, even if the jellyfish everywhere scared me a bit. Later in the evening we went out with one of the small boats again, sadly a little late for a last sunset cruise but still a really nice ride with champagne and chocolate. Nina, Constance and me planned that actually for a long time and took Lara, Paula and Rasmus with us. When we arrived back in the accommodation the party there had already started and we joined the others – me knitting to get the socks finished. It got a really long night and some people of the other group spent it with us – it was also their end of the course. We saw the sun rising again when we went to bad after a last walk to the beach.

Pierre, Rasmus and me prepared the breakfast the next morning – I really did not feel like eating after 1,5 hours of sleep and sadly red whine that made me feel sick. This morning was the first morning I woke up Nina and Constance for breakfast because they slept in. As we wanted to catch a bus just after 11 am we had to hurry a little to get the rooms cleaned and everything packed. In the end Nina drove only Constance, Paula, Gianlucca and me with all our luggage to the bus and we struggled with 8 bags, backpacks and so on to bring them to Constance. Nina and Constance helped me to get my luggage to the tram and back to Helmutsro, where I directly went to Urskas room, waiting for Kai, who had my keys. After I had a shower and felt alive again, I went to Urska again to had a coffee and a talk and headed of to the Slotskogen, where I met Kai and some people of his course and invited my whole course to join in. Simon, Rebecca, Constance, Nina, Rasmus where there as well as Raphaelle, Paula and a lot more. It was really nice to see all the people again. In the evening Paula organized a last Party with our course in her big kitchen and James, Marta, Pierre, Kalle came there as well, so almost the whole course was together. I was way too tired to stay for long, so Constance, Rasmus and I left already pretty early and said good bye. It was a really good decision to take the course, but in the end it hurt a lot to know, we would never spent time all together again. I was pretty depressed the next days but I also look back to our great time and am happy to  get to know all of the people in so much different ways. Thank you all for the awesome time!!!!
